First of all, let me say that blogging is a new experience for me. As assigned, I am supposed to choose an “obsession,” if you will, to blog about for the rest of the semester. But before I begin to tell you about my obsessions (which I may or may not have yet to define), I find it necessary to tell you a little bit about myself.
Writing is what I do. As a fifth year senior trying to pave a path into that thing called the ‘real world,’ I find that my thoughts are often better expressed as words on a page. I’ve been keeping a journal since before I can remember; this has effectively produced endless pages of vented emotions, thoughts and dreams that have graced my eyes only.
I suppose the purpose of a blog is to share some of those thoughts and dreams (or nightmares), but until I get to that level, I’ll tell you some of the more simple details of my life.
I am in charge of the Public Relations/Marketing department for the Iowa State Daily, am addicted to coffee and diet coke, love reading good books, enjoy live music and margaritas (not necessarily together) and love to dance. I prefer dogs over cats, am deathly afraid of the Chucky and Gremlins movies (Furby’s included), and prefer creamy peanut butter over chunky. These are probably useless details to most of you, but hey, that’s just me.
Getting back to the assignment of ‘obsessions,’ I will openly admit that I am obsessed with New York City. This fascination goes far beyond the glamour and glitz of a big city, the possible celebrity sightings, and the way New York is depicted in the ever popular show, Sex and the City (also an obsession, by the way).
New York was my home for almost a year while I completed two internships at different PR agencies. Lucky enough to find a semi-normal roommate and a apartment bigger than a shoe-box, I moved there knowing no one, but managed to make it my home. Some of my favorite stories were created in the Big Apple (nights of great parties, crazy people, and the day Gene Simmons tried to make out with me…don’t worry, I turned him down. If you want more details, just ask). I plan to move back there someday, but not until I can afford the expensive living costs, not to mention the $2500 per month rent.
Moving back to Ames after living in New York was, needless to say, quite the change. But life continues and until my bank account can begin to grow past the student-loan debt, I’m happy with where I’m at. That is unless, of course, Gene has plans to come and wisk me away…

I spent the summer interning with ABC News in NYC…it is such a different world there! I’m not sure if I could really live there, everything is sooo expensive and I missed the simple things (like my car). But the job opportunities are so amazing. It’s definitely a city that can get more comfortable when you have the money to make it so. Not so much for the recent college grad. We should definitely talk NYC some time!
